Investor (non-voting advisor)
Jim Smith, a private investor and non-voting member of Laredo Energy’s board of directors, is a prominent Houston businessman and one of the largest commercial real estate property owners in the Houston area.
A 1963 graduate of the University of Texas, he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, was captain of the university’s track team and was a member of Silver Spurs and of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. Mr. Smith founded Smith & Company in 1964 as its sole owner, and in the course of business eventually developed some two million square feet of commercial real estate space in Houston, including Champions Forest Plaza Shopping Center, the Centre at Bunker Hill, and Echo Lane Shopping Center.
Active in community service, Mr. Smith has supported and worked with programs for homeless youth and for handicapped children and adults. He is Senior Chairman Emeritus of Memorial Hermann Hospital Systems in Houston.
Mr. Smith is a founding principal of Laredo Energy and a former member of the board of directors of Michael Petroleum Company. In 2008 he formed SmithCo, a developer of commercial real estate, with his son, Jim Jr. He and his wife, Sherry, have three grown children, and six grandchildren.
